Severe rainfall has wreaked havoc across Sri Lanka, affecting more than 21,000 people and leaving widespread damage in multiple districts. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has confirmed four deaths and hundreds of homes damaged, as authorities rush to provide relief and shelter to displaced families.

The island nation has been experiencing torrential rainfall for several days, triggered by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. The downpour has caused flash floods, landslides, and road blockages in several provinces, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central regions.

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 21,452 individuals from 5,876 families have been affected by the heavy rainfall. Around 591 houses sustained partial or complete damage, forcing several families to take refuge in temporary shelters.

The DMC confirmed four fatalities linked to flood-related incidents, while rescue and evacuation efforts continue in high-risk zones. Emergency teams, including the Sri Lanka Army and Navy, have been deployed to assist local authorities in distributing relief supplies and relocating residents from flood-prone areas.

Officials have warned of further heavy rainfall in the coming days, especially in the southwestern and central highlands. The Meteorological Department has advised people living near riverbanks and landslide-prone regions to remain on high alert.

Transportation and daily life have been severely disrupted, with several roads submerged and schools temporarily closed in affected areas. Power outages and communication breakdowns have also been reported in parts of Ratnapura, Galle, and Kegalle districts.

Local relief organizations, along with the Red Cross, are providing food, clean water, and medical assistance to those displaced. The government has announced emergency relief funds for rebuilding damaged infrastructure and homes once conditions stabilize.

As Sri Lanka grapples with the aftermath of the heavy rains, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of vulnerable communities and restoring essential services. The DMC continues to monitor weather patterns and urges citizens to stay informed and follow official advisories to minimize further risks.
